Athena and Arachne Vintage Glass Intaglio Cameo w/ 1950s Swarovski Teardrop Silver Plated Chain

This necklace is so unique and beautiful!

This statement piece features a 1940s West German intaglio cameo, meaning it is reverse carved or molded from the backside, hand painted in sky blue and silver.

This cameo tells the story of Arachne and Athena, famously told in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, is a Greek myth about pride and divine retribution. Arachne, a talented mortal weaver, boasted she was better than Athena, goddess of crafts, and refused to give her credit. After a contest where Arachne wove scenes of gods' misdeeds, an angered Athena transformed her into a spider to weave forever.

I've mounted this 1" wide glass cameo onto a flourishing silver plated filigree backing.

A small 1950s clear Swarovski crystal teardrop hangs from fine silver plated chain.

The necklace is 18" long with silver plated rolo chain, and has a 3" extender chain at the back.

It hangs beautifully on the neck & chest.
